How to Turn a Quick Chat into a Career Opportunity

For many new graduates, the idea of networking can feel intimidating—especially when you don’t think you have a network. But one of the most effective ways to start building meaningful professional relationships is through a simple, low-pressure conversation: the 20-minute chat.  Some call it a “coffee chat”.  Others might call it a “quick touchbase.”  The point is call it something nonchalant and make sure it sounds quick.  

A coffee chat is an informal meeting—virtual or in person—where you can learn from someone’s experience, get career advice, and, if done right, open doors to future opportunities. Here’s how to make the most of these conversations and turn them into career-building moments.

  1. Find the Right People to Connect With

You don’t need to know CEOs or industry leaders to start networking. Great people to reach out to include:

  • Friends who are working at a company you’d like to work at
  • Neighbors or parent’s friends from home
  • People who you see you have mutual connections with on LinkedIn and hopefully something additional in common to establish rapport
  • Alumni from your school or social clubs (check LinkedIn and your university’s alumni network)
  • Professionals in roles or industries that interest you
  • Speakers from career fairs, guest lectures, or industry panels
  • Connections of your professors, internship supervisors, or family friends

Start by identifying 5–10 professionals and send a short, personalized message introducing yourself and asking for a 20-minute chat.  The chat can be in person, over the phone, or a video conference.

  1. Make a Strong First Impression with Your Outreach

When reaching out, keep your message concise and professional. Here’s an example:

Subject: Your expertise and guidance  

Hi [Name],
I recently graduated from [University] and am exploring a career in [industry]. I came across your profile and was really impressed by your experience at [Company]. I’d love to learn more about your career journey and any advice you might have for someone just starting out. Would you be open to a quick 20-minute coffee chat (virtual call, meet up, call it what you want)? I can be flexible with timing.

[Your Name]

  1. Prepare Thoughtful Questions

A great coffee chat is not just about what you can get—it’s about building a relationship.  That means you must be willing to help the person as well.   Have 3–5 thoughtful questions ready, such as:

  • Are there any companies right now in this field you know are hiring?
  • Coming out of undergrad, what skills do you think are most valuable for someone starting in this field?
  • What do you wish you had known when you were in my shoes?
  • Is there anyone you can introduce me to in order to have an additional conversation?
  • How can I help you today?  Is there anything I can provide for you?
  1. Make the Conversation Engaging

During the chat, be engaged, take notes, and keep the conversation flowing naturally. A few key tips:

  • Start with gratitude: “Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with me today.”
  • Show genuine curiosity: Listen actively and ask follow-up questions.
  • Be mindful of time: Stick to the agreed-upon length and wrap up respectfully.  Use a phrase such as “You’ve been so generous with your time today, I don’t want to keep you.”
  1. End with a Light Ask

As the conversation wraps up, it’s okay to make a small request if it feels appropriate. For example:

  • “Would you be open to staying in touch?”
  • “Is there anyone else in your network you think I should connect with?”
  1. Follow Up and Stay Connected

A strong follow-up can turn a one-time chat into a lasting relationship. Within 24 hours, send a thank-you email:

Hi [Name],
I really appreciate you taking the time to speak with me today. I learned a lot about [specific insight they shared], and your advice on [another key takeaway] was incredibly helpful. I’d love to stay in touch and will keep you posted on my progress. Thanks again!

Then, continue to engage over time by commenting on their LinkedIn posts, sharing relevant articles, or updating them on your career progress.  When the person posts something on LinkedIn, if appropriate – go ahead and click “Like” to continue to show support.
